Families in Action was inspired in the days after the Women's March in Washington DC. Both Kristin and I (Amanda) left the event feeling motivated to make change, yet had to balance our energy for service with our work and family commitments. Simply put, how could we help our community when we usually have young kids in tow? We quickly realized that our sweet children-- who we initially viewed as a challenge to our activism-- are our greatest asset when it comes to social change. By making community engagement a family value, something our family is committed to and practices regularly, we are creating a generation of activists for today and tomorrow. Moreoever, we are having fun! Together, our families are doing our best to the world a better place, and we hope your family will join us!
Our mission statement is to grow a community of engaged families committed to positive stewardship of our world, from the local to the global; to teach our children the importance of community action and service; and to build new generations of leaders through intergenerational relationships and strong role models.
Families in Action holds events twice a month, usually every other Wednesday from 4:30-6:30. Each event benefits a local non-profit and is open to children and families of all ages! Some events are fundraisers, such as dance parties to send refugees to camp and star gazing in support of the Discovery Museum. Other events are hands-on community service opportunities, such as seed planting for the Urban Agriculture Collective of Charlottesville and building toolboxes for Habitat for Humanity. See the events tab for other examples of our work.
Families in Action relies on the support of middle and high school interns to help run operations, engage the children at events, and with social media. See the Intern page if you are interested in applying!
